Long Beach Container Terminal – Safer, greener and more productive
See the first fully-automated terminal in the United States, LBCT in Long Beach, California in operation and learn interesting specifics about the terminal. The powerful mega-cranes at the quay serve mega-vessels with tremendous lifting capacity in terms of weight and ability to handle multiple containers simultaneously. Fast discharging of containers is further enabled by the fast, fully automatic portal trolley that moves containers between the crane platform and the horizontal transportation. At the yard, efficient automatic stacking cranes featuring fully automatic landing and pick-up of containers on road chassis and remote exception management from a centralized control room, ensure efficient yard operations. The automated intermodal yard cranes serve the trains at on-dock rail yard....

Long Beach Cruise Terminal Port Tour & What to Expect (4K)
See what it is like embarking on a Carnival cruise ship at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, in the greater Los Angeles area. Embarkation was a pretty smooth process, and definitely fast and efficient. What was especially surprising was that you don't get the room key card at check in- you go onboard the cruise ship without it, using a barcode receipt for each passenger in its stead. It is only when the cabins are ready do you tear open an envelope outside your stateroom which contains your room keycards.
Parking was easy as the garage is a short 5 to 10 minute walk to the terminal building. It is also where you are dropped off if you are not parking there.

Why U.S. Ports Are Some Of The Least Efficient In The World
The Port of Los Angeles, the busiest port in North America, saw record volume in 2021. Imports including furniture, car parts and apparel surged to a record 5.5 million TEU's in 2021, a 13% increase from the previous high in 2018. A TEU or twenty-foot equivalent unit is the industry standard to measure cargo capacity for ships and terminals. One 20 ft container can hold about 400 flat-screen TVs. But along with that volume came an array of headwinds impacting everyone from retail stores and large manufacturers to portside communities.
As of February 4, 2022 there was a backlog of over 90 container ships drifting, slow steaming or waiting outside the Port of Los Angeles. At the same time there were almost 69,000 empty containers at the port’s terminals and off-dock depots.

Parking was easy as the garage is a short 5 to 10 minute walk to the terminal building. It is also where you are dropped off if you are not parking there.
The Long Beach Cruise terminal building itself as you can see is pretty interesting outside and inside. It is a white domed building covered with triangular panels situated next to the Queen Mary, with an equally interesting interior decorated tastefully by Carnival cruise line. We were embarking the ship near Christmas, and there were many festive holiday decor inside the terminal.
After check-in you have to walk up a ramp that goes several stories high before going on a covered gangway bridge entering the ship. This particular cruise port also has a Carnival's Captain's Lounge, though we did not see anyone needing to make use of it because the boarding process went very quickly.
At the end of the video, before our cruise ship, the Carnival Imagination, sailed away, we were able to see the Queen Mary light up at night at the Port of Long Beach. Enjoy and please feel free to comment or ask question if you have any and we'd be more than happy to answer!
This was from our late December 2018 4 day Catalina/Mexico cruise on the Carnival Imagination.

Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) is the greenest and leanest terminal in the United States. This fully electrified terminal moves 20K+ Vessels in and out in less than 3 days and Trucks in and out in less an 40 minutes. It also has a dedicated on dock rail service. Located in Long Beach at the Port of Long Beach (POLB) LBCT has realized it's powerful vision to become Net Zero, to improve the air quality in the region and to thrive economically by going from 700,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent) in 2015 to 3.3 Million TEU capacity. During the pandemic and supply chain stoppages in 2020/2021, LBCT never had a ship at anchor waiting, preventing consumers from getting their products and polluting the environment. LBCT was able to take in an additional 36 vessels to help manage and relieve the congestion. Over 100 zero emissions automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that are battery powered travel between the vessels and the stacking cranes moving the containers from ship to their destination on trucks and or rail. Trucks drop off and pick up containers in less than an hour, the shortest time documented in the country by Harbor Trucking Association. Leaders in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California and the Country are cited in this video as stating that LBCT is the future of logistics in our country and the world.
